Why We Are Our Own Worst Enemies When It Comes To Beating Burnout!

Updated: Jul 21, 2021

If you want to BEAT burnout you MUST incorporate daily habits into your routine that are resourceful. And I say daily because beating burnout starts off with micro-goals or daily habit stacking.

But why, when wanting to implement new GOOD habits do so few succeed?

The answer….because of sabotage. 🙈

Here’s how the circle of sabotage works for the 9 major saboteurs, when it comes to starting new habits:

AVOIDER

Why the classic avoider persona wont start a new habit, to address their potential burnout issue. They think things like:

  • “this new habit (which by the way would be amazing) is actually too unpleasant, so if I let the idea go, my burnout will just take care of itself”

  • “Actually my comfort zone is just fine, nah that new habit isn’t really what I want”

  • “I’d rather not deal with the burnout thing, so to heck with new habits”

CONTROLLER

Why the classic controller persona wont start a new habit, until it is way too late (maybe) and burnout has come knocking. They think things like:

  • “others want and need me to take control, no time for my own habits”

  • “no one tells me what to do, even my own body, even if it is good for me”

HYPER-ACHIEVER

Why the classic hyper-achiever persona wont start a new habit, until it is way too late (maybe) and burnout has come knocking. They think things like:

  • “I’ve got to be the best at what I do even this new thing, and honestly right now that idea exhausts me”

  • “if I can’t be outstanding at x, why even bother”

  • “My focus on speed and action, no space for slow and steady when it comes to new habits. Boring”

HYPER-RATIONAL

Why the classic hyper-rational persona wont start a new habit, until it is way too late (maybe). They think things like:

  • “my feelings of exhaustion are distracting and irrelevant”

  • “doing x - who has time for touchy feely stuff like that?”

  • “habits mean I have to get to know my feelings and that scares me”

HYPER-VIGILANT

Why the classic hyper-vigilant persona wont start a new habit to address their potential burnout issues, until it is way too late (maybe). They think things like:

  • “Nothing works for me so why bother?”

  • “Doing x is risky. If I make a mistake, I fear people will jump down my throat”

  • “Starting x - I need to know all the rules first”

PLEASER

Why would a pleaser type persona not start a new habit, to help address their potential burnout issues (until it is way too late)?

  • “To be a good person I should put the needs of others first. Starting something new habit takes time and it won’t allow me to put others first”

  • “I can be flexible to fit in with others, so I don’t have to focus on my own habits, i’ll just go with what others need”

RESTLESS

Why would a restless type persona not start a new habit, to help address their potential burnout issues (until it is way too late)?

  • “A habit requires consistency, and that is not fulfilling"

  • "Another, better habit has got to be more exciting"

  • "Negative feelings from out of comfort zone "stuff" sucks"

  • "I don't have the discipline to last to the end of the cycle to create new habits"

STICKLER (Perfectionist)

Why would a stickler type persona not start a new habit, to help address their potential burnout issues (until it is way too late)?

  • “If you can't do the new habit perfectly, don't do it at all"

  • "I need to get my ducks in a row first before I start a new habit"

  • "I hate making mistakes when doing new things!"

VICTIM

Why would a victim persona not start a new habit, to help address their potential burnout issues (until it is way too late)?

  • “No one understands how hard new things are for me"

  • "I wish someone would rather rescue me - or do it for me!"

If you were to be 100% honest with yourself, which one above resonates with you?
