So if there is one person who (IMHO) rocks the whole work-life balance thing: it's The Big Man in Red = Santa Clause.
I mean what's not to love about what he does and what he stands for and how efficiently he does it, but honestly he's a bit of an enigma right?
In my line of work when the subject of "balance" comes up in the workshop room, my ears are wide open! (I run workshops for elite work professionals...helping them lessen their emotional, mental and body's toxic load so that they can sustainably perform at their peak).
There is a notion called "modeling success", meaning copying or borrowing another's philosophy & actions when there is a missing piece in your own success strategy. For today's frolics I look to none other than Santa.
Call me crazy but you never know when any of this may come handy, but don’t thank me thank Santa!
1. EVERYONE LOVES A GIVER – which is of course amazing, just remember to do the self-maintenance so that you can keep on giving. You can’t give from an empty cup! Oxygen mask on self first please people.
2. HIRE A TEAM OF HARDWORKING PEOPLE TO MAKE YOU LOOK GOOD – Santa gets the glory, but the elves work hard to make it all look easy. Maybe you need to hire some elves this next year (to help with say the house work or ironing), just leave pleasurable refuelling things such as walking the dog and delicious home cooked meals to you!
3. WORK YOUR DATABASE (network) – Santa makes a list and checks it twice. Most businesses have a database but rarely do they use it. Most people have access to the right people (2 degrees of separation) but they don’t work their personal network nearly enough. Ask yourself, are you being as resourceful as you can with what you have in front of you?
4. DELIVER ON TIME – Would we still believe in Santa if he missed a year, or came late? Honour your promised due date, stick to it and make it a non-negotiable, especially when it comes to your own self-care.
5. TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO TREAT YOU – It is a given, every kid knows to leave out Milk & Cookies, and leave carrots for the reindeer. I mean like hello this is Santa 1-0-1 stuff right here. Question is does your boss/ clients / partner(s) know how to treat you? Have you taught them (in a kind caring way) your "rules of engagement"?
6. DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND – Santa does this with KIDS...either: naughty or nice! His boundaries are pretty clear and no one challenges them. He is firm, but kind….play by the global rules or you get coal. Question is are you good at setting your boundaries? Or do you move them to be too accommodating?
7. LEVERAGE – Santa knows how to do this, very well. Other Santa’s are in every mall, shopping centre, market place…all over the world. While he’s (honestly) chilling with Mrs Clause. You have to start flipping the switch, flip the energy…from you needing them, to them needing you. This is EXTREMELY powerful and excellent for your energy.
8. LIMIT ACCESS – Santa’s got this thing so waxed. Parents try to threaten with phoning him but you just can’t get him on the mobile, or just see him whenever you want. You’ve have send your request to an obscure PO Box in the North Pole. Are you too accessible (think answering work emails on your phone), too flexible, too easy to take advantage of? May have to work on that one.
9. LAW of SCARCITY – Santa builds massive anticipation and even gets kids counting down the sleep until the big day. He’s not around 365 days of the year, but makes a massive impact when he does come to town. Are you bleeding energy out on the floor by overworking and over-functioning for others? Picking up the slack can be nobel but it won’t help you if you are burning out already.
10. COSTUME & SELF-PROMOTION – If he just wore regular clothes, he would be no big deal. Do you have a uniform / gizmo / signature thing that makes you THE go-to man / woman? He stands out and is proud of it, no shame in this now, is there! He says Ho-Ho-Ho and everyone knows what that means. Stand for something and be proud of it - own it. #PersonalBranding
11. GET OTHERS TO TALK YOU UP – he is admired by others, so he never has to talk himself up, he lets them do the talking for him. Who is your personal sneezer right now? You know the one who splashes your name around (in a good way) that will help you when you need it most. Ensure good relationships and comms with these sneezers.
12. BUILD A LIFE THAT GIVES YOU FREE TIME – With all his body doubles and the team of elves, Santa really only works a couple of days a year. He’s leveraged to the max.
Most of the wrapping is done in India these days, so he and Mrs C get 363 days off, which they spend in the Bahamas sipping pina colada and getting caught in the rain. Question is are you as leveraged with your time and energy as possible? Making things happen whilst you sleep or whilst you sun yourself on the beach? Or are you still training time for money old school style. Perhaps it is time for a thinking upgrade…!
If you want to feel refreshed and energised BEFORE the festive season hits and NOT continually tired, worried or Uber cranky because you just can't relax, here are a few ways to starting micro habiting your way to success and effortless wins.
